woah! music is throwing down two (2) pretty cool events this Friday August 12.

(1) woah! gordo DJ vinyl set at The Cloak & Dagger located at 394 College Street (east of Bathurst). 10pm start. 2:30am end. NO COVER! EVERY SECOND (2nd) FRIDAY OF EACH MONTH!

woah! gordo parties started many years ago in Kensington Market at Bread and Circus, and after somewhat of a long break, they are back! This month we'll be spinning music from such local acts as The Deadly Snakes, The Junction, Jilted Lovers Club, Tokyo Police Club, The Sheepdogs, Dinosaur Bones, The Darcys, Zeus, Yukon Blonde, Biblical, Boss Nova, and Monster Truck. We also throw in tons of 70's tracks from our extensive vinyl collection. I recently bought a crate full of 70's goodies from an antique dealer in the town of Rousseau and I'm pretty excited to start spinning them. Sly and the Family Stone, The Band, Steely Dan, Dr. John, and many others will be surfacing on Friday! Music really doesn't get better than this!

(2) woah! music presents The Machams & Sitcoms at The Velvet Underground located at 510 Queen Street West. Doors open at 9pm. $5. 19+

THE MACHAMS
In two (2) sentences, or less, describe your band.
The MacHams are a boy band (sort of, but not really, more like indie-rock) made up of three brothers from Toronto – very frivolous and out to entertain.

As musicians are you very conscious of the direction your music takes? What can people expect to hear at the upcoming show?
We’re not molded by labels or promoters, so we take pride in having full creative control – making sure that our music is made of real tones, made by real instruments. Although we’ve been reviewed as having a sound influenced by ‘90s CanRock, you can expect to hear catchy/head-bopping tunes about real experiences that just about anyone can relate to.

Who/what has inspired you as musicians?

You could laugh if you want, but boy bands such as Boyz II Men, Backstreet Boys ...and Hanson. Our songs are inspired by life and personal experiences.

How would you describe your experiences as an independent band over the past years? Have you experienced any major challenges and/or significant moments?
It’s definitely been a learning experience at the very least – the music industry is complex and full of surprises. The good news is that we adapt to the craziness and progress every year – recently we’ve independently released a full length album (STARE SMILE TALK) and have performed in festivals such as Indie Week, Canadian Music Week/Fest, and the Toronto Independent Music Awards (winning BEST LIVE ACT).

If there was one musician that you could work with, who would it be and how would they be involved?
That would have to be Will Ferrell on the Cowbell (More Cowbell!!!)

Albums you're listening to at the moment.
Mix tapes from like ten years ago – the good ol’ days!

Favourite restaurant in Toronto. Why?

Bluestone Bistro – Cliff is the world’s best server!

Favourite independent coffee place in Toronto. Why?
F’Coffee (on Queen East) – freshly roasted, freshly grinded, and freshly brewed!

Favourite independent musician/band in Toronto. Why?

The Asian gentleman at Finch station that plays the one stringed instrument (is it called a duxianqin?) – he makes the subway ride joyous for passing by commuters.

Favourite card game. Why?

Monopoly Deal – it’s like a game of monopoly in your hands, literally!

What does the Summer/Fall of 2011 hold for your band? Any tours, recordings, special events?
We have a couple of shows lined up for August and September, and we just confirmed that we’re performing at Indie Week (3rd year in a row!) Harmonix is testing our song, GLIDE, to be released in their Rock Band video game. We’re going to release a new recording, SOMEDAY (not in any way related to the Justin Bieber perfume) to Canadian college radio, as well as iTunes. And last but not least, we’ll be playing at the Emma Rose Foundation Charity Event for awareness about children with MPS diseases.

SITCOMS
In two (2) sentences, or less, describe your band.

We're a guitar/drum rock duo that focuses on melodic guitar loops mixed with energetic beats, and even the odd catchy melody

As musicians are you very conscious of the direction your music takes? What can people expect to hear at the upcoming show?
We just want to be creative and stray away from the rock sound that is popular right now. You can expect an entertaining, loud, high energy set.

Who/what has inspired you as musicians?
The lack of quality of music that is being circulated is a big inspiration....people must be dying to here some new sounds so we figured we'd try to make them.

How would you describe your experiences as an independent band over the past years? Have you experienced any major challenges and/or significant moments?
We're the ex-guitarists from a screamo band that managed to play some pretty cool venues and shows a few years back but we took a few years off since then and decided to put this project together just under a year ago.
